Fighter of the Month:  Michael Chandler

Event:  Bellator 58 (November 19, 2011)

Opponent:  Eddie Alvarez

Result:  Fourth round rear naked choke submission

Bellator lightweight tournament champion Michael Chandler made the most of his title shot against top-ten ranked Eddie Alvarez in mid-November’s Bellator 58.  In one of the best fights of the year, and one of the most exciting bouts ever in the sport, the undefeated challenger dethroned the international veteran in a back-and-forth bout ending in impressive fashion.

The first round saw Chandler as the aggressor from the opening bell, pressuring Alvarez and unleashing against the cage.  Chandler landed good shots until Alvarez landed a big shot of his own, backing off Chandler and testing the challenger’s chin.

Round two was similar, with Chandler chasing down the champion with combinations and big shots.  Close to potentially stopping Alvarez throughout the second round, the champion made a strong comeback in round three.

In the third round Alvarez used good combinations and aggression to start picking apart the challenger.  Chandler appeared to be slowing down after two fast-paced rounds, throwing single shots more frequently then combinations.  It appeared the early blitz from the challenger may be his undoing.

Then, in round four, Chandler came out explosively.  Repeating the first two rounds, Chandler brought the fight to Alvarez but this time staggered the champion and secured mount.  Raining down brutal ground and pound, Chandler forced Alvarez to roll, giving up his back.  Chandler sunk in his hooks and fought for the rear naked choke, forcing the champion to tap.

On the cusp of the top ten rankings, Chandler has established himself as one of the most promising fighters in what is considered by many to be the deepest division in the sport.  Many look forward to his upcoming non-title bouts and whomever he may defend against after the next lightweight tournament.
