Sarnavskiy Destroys KuKu at M-1 Challenge XXI and Earns KO of the Night

Midway through M-1 Global’s greatest event of 2010, the talented rising star, Alexander ‘Tiger’ Sarnavskiy showed the crowd and fans watching via live stream why he is considered one of Russia’s most dangerous lightweight fighters. Sarnavskiy unleashed a devastating spinning back-fist that knocked out Victor Kuku in epic fashion, ending the anticipated bout in only 14 seconds and marking the bout as one of 2010’s greatest MMA knock-outs.

“There wasn’t a person inside the Ice Palace whose jaw didn’t drop,” says Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Global. “This is easily a candidate for ‘knock-out’ of the year.”

Both Sarnavskiy and Kuku started the opening round by touching gloves. In his typical acrobatic style, Kuku faked a jumping leg kick, landed and ate the spinning back-fist that sent him to the canvass; adding salt to the wound for safe measure, the ‘Tiger’ pounced on his prey to deliver the bout-ending blows to insure the ref intervened to stop the fight.

Following on the heels of a phenomenal night of fights, M-1 Global proudly announces its sophomore super-event for 2010 with M-1 Challenge XXII: Gallicchio vs. Zavurov Friday December 10th from the Druzhba Arena in Moscow, Russia. The evening crowns the remaining Challenge series champions with battles in the Light Heavyweight, Middleweight and Welterweight divisions.

Guram Wipes Garner From Consciousness For Submission of the Night Honors at M-1 Challenge XXI

In the headline bout at M-1 Challenge XXI, American Top Team heavyweight, Kenny ‘Deuce’ Garner became the latest victim to fall prey to the Georgian powerhouse, Guram Gugenishvili; Guram now improves his unblemished record to 10-0 after choking Garner unconscious with a standing guillotine choke that earns him Submission of the Night honors.

“This was a great fight between two very well-matched opponents,” says M-1 Global Director of Operations, Evgeni Kogan. “Kenny exposed weaknesses in Guram’s game which need to be rectified; there will come a time when brute strength will no longer be enough to win. Congratulations to our first-ever M-1 Challenge heavyweight champion and ‘hats off’ to Kenny for a great fight. We look forward to seeing both men back in the M-1 ring."

In an eventful first round, Garner came out of the corner looking to press the action and stuffing Guram’s early take down attempts. After being re-started after the pair broke through the ropes, Guram worked through an array of submission attempts and a wicked neck crank reminiscent of his previous victories. Fighting from his back, Garner absorbed a left from up high which opened a gash dangerously close to his right eye, causing the referee to stall for a quick inspection by the ringside physician who gave the bout the green light to continue. From here out, Garner worked bottom and top position as he controlled the rest of the frame with the judges’ scorecards giving him a 10-9 round.

The tide only took 54 more seconds to change as Guram dodged a looping right hand to start the second round and caught the American in a head-and-arm choke; the pair then shuffled into the red corner where Guram locked in the standing guillotine and choked Garner into a lifeless limp body that dropped to the canvass after the referee broke them apart.

With Guram delivering a solid performance, Gugenishvili now wears the M-1 Challenge championship gold around his waist; fans can expect to see him back inside the ring in early 2011 for his first title defense against Eastern Europe’s M-1 Selection tournament winner, Maxim Grishin.

Che Mills and Magomed ‘The Eagle’ Shikshabekov Battle Earns ‘Fight of the Night’ Honors at M-1 Challenge XXI

This past Saturday night from the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, M-1 Challenge XXI: Guram vs. Garner held a frenzied crowd and fans online worldwide in captivating astonishment with the hottest mixed martial event produced in Europe this year. With suffocating chokes, joint- jacking submissions, one of 2010’s top knock-outs and stunning doctor stoppages, only one fight can be hailed as ‘Fight of the Night’: Che Mills vs. Magomed ‘The Eagle’ Shikshabekov.

In an incredible battle between two highly experienced combat sport specialists, England’s Che Mills handed the Russian hot prospect, Magomed Shikshabekov, his first career loss with a four-round unanimous decision marathon with the extension round being applied to the bout after the judges had scored the tilt a draw after 15 minutes.

Shikshabekov, who had needed only 95 seconds on average to claim victory over his prior opponents, clearly struggled with the size and strength of the British veteran. Though Shikshabekov managed to get Mills to the ground with his first attempted throw where he then worked diligently for multiple leglocks leaving Mills in agonizing pain, Mills managed to escape and defend the Russian’s subsequent takedowns; Mills was then able to take control of the fight and turn momentum in his favour with hard, skull-cracking knee strikes.

As ‘The Eagle’ did his best to mount his own offensive, the third round was all Mills as the quiet Gloucester man and former Cage Rage Champion mounted Shikshabekov for more than four minutes and completely dominated the proceedings in what was easily scored a 10-8 round. At the close of three frames, considering the one-point deduction Mills received pre-fight for missing weight by four pounds, the judges somehow returned with a draw, forcing the extension round.

The fourth was of no benefit to the exhausted Shikshabekov, who was unable to mount any sort of compelling offensive arsenal. Despite a dubious spinning back-fist that would have had more effect in the first round, the pair jostled between stand-up exchanges and the canvass where Mills worked diligently from the guard. Mills won the fourth frame convincingly and earned the unanimous nod from the judges for a career-marking victory.
