UFC Brazil: Belfort vs. Bisping Announced



Scheduled for January 19th, this will mark the second year in a row a Brazilian event kicks off the UFC’s calendar worldwide. In the main event of the evening, Brazilian legend Vitor Belfort faces TUF 3 winner Michael Bisping; fans will also get a chance to watch the debuts of Daniel Sarafian, Godofredo Pepey and Thiago Bodão as official UFC fighters


One of the biggest legends of MMA, Vitor Belfort will return to the Octagon on January 19th, facing off against TUF 3 light heavyweight winner Michael Bisping in the main bout of the first Brazilian event of 2013. In a venue yet to be defined, fans will also witness the debuts of three of the first The Ultimate Fighter Brasil stars as official UFC fighters: Daniel Sarafian, now fully recovered from the injury that forced him out of the show’s big finale, faces C.B Dollaway; Godofredo Pepey, featherweight finalist, faces fellow Brazilian Miltinho Vieira; and Thiago Bodão goes up against Michael Kuiper.

Brazilian audiences will also get a chance to see up close Brazilian standouts such as Edson Barboza, Thiago Tavares, Diego Nunes, Gabriel Napão, Wagner Caldeirão, Ronny Markes, Francisco Masaranduba and Iuri Marajó. All bouts have been verbally agreed to and will be aired live in Brazil exclusively by Canal Combate.


“As we had anticipated, 2013 will be a very busy year for the Brazilian fans. We are very happy about this January 19th event, which will kick off our calendar for this year like UFC Rio 2 did in 2012”, says Marshall Zelaznik, UFC’s Managing Director of International Development. “There are still a few details to be settled before we decide the host city. We expect to announce the venue over the next weeks”.


The 19th January event will be the fifth one held in Brazil. The country has hosted three events in Rio de Janeiro and one in Belo Horizonte since August of 2011. Apart from the events, 2013 will also bring the second edition of the reality show The Ultimate Fighter Brasil to Brazilian fans.

Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman Fail Drug Tests and Zuffa Releases a Statement



Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, released a statement today regarding UFC light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar and heavyweight Dave Herman:


“Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman tested positive for banned substances following their bouts at UFC 153. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Both fighters have admitted taking the banned substances and have orally agreed to suspensions. Once the suspensions have been reduced to written agreements, the results of their tests and the agreed upon suspensions will be sent to the Association of Boxing Commissions official record-keeper so other jurisdictions will be on notice.”


It is not yet known if the two are connected but Stephan Bonnar announced his retirement from mixed martial arts on Halloween.






Lyman Good vs. Andrey Koreshkov to Headline Bellator 82; Michael Page, Shawn Bunch Debut



After a pair of devastating knockout victories inside the Bellator cage, the Season 7 Welterweight Tournament Finals are set as Lyman “Cyborg” Good is ready to lock horns with the always dangerous Andrey Koreshkov at Bellator 82 on November 30th from The Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.


The night will also feature a welterweight clash between Bellator veterans David “The Caveman” Rickels and Michigan’s own Jason “The Finisher” Fischer. For the former University of Central Michigan star, Fischer knows this is the biggest opportunity of his young career.


“I’ve been incredibly lucky to collect two huge victories with Bellator, so to get this opportunity to fight David Rickels in front of all my friends and family, it really is a dream come true,” said Fischer. “The University of Central Michigan is like a second home to me, so I’m counting the days until November 30th.”


Two long-awaited Bellator debuts will also be featured at Bellator 82, as English Kickboxing Champion and internet sensation Michael Page will be in action, along with former U.S. Olympic wrestling qualifier Shawn Bunch, who is making his professional debut inside the Bellator cage.


“I’ve had my sights set on Bellator for a long time,” Bunch said. “While I’ve been training in MMA for over four years, I’ve never been able to fully focus on the sport with my wrestling obligations. After watching guys like Ben Askren and King Mo, guys I really look up to in this sport have success, I knew the time was right to make the move to Bellator.”

The Ultimate Fighter Finale 16 – Fight Card Update



A match between two fighters coming off of Fight of the Night performances has been verbally agreed to as former WEC champion Jamie Varner takes on the “Young Assassin” Melvin Guillard at the Ultimate Fighter Finale on FX. In another lightweight battle that night, two of TUF 15’s standouts will reunite at the TUF 16 Finale as John Cofer and Mike Rio have verbally agreed to meet December 15 in Las Vegas.

Aldo vs. Edgar Official for UFC 156 on Super Bowl Weekend 2013



Super Bowl weekend will bring UFC fans a long-awaited superfight between featherweight champion Jose Aldo and former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. The featherweight title fight will take place at UFC 156 in Las Vegas on February 2.


The bout was briefly slated to headline UFC 153 in Rio before Aldo was forced to withdraw due to an injury.


“I’m pumped,” UFC president Dana White told USA Today when the bout was first made in August. “I think that people are going to be very excited for this fight.”


“This is not only a world title fight but also a superfight that has long been a dream match for many fans,” said White. “Aldo and Edgar are two fantastic fighters who are always a part of the pound-for-pound debate.”


The news was first announced Tuesday on UFC Tonight, FUEL TV’s weekly news program. More details of the February 2 event, including venue and ticket information, will be announced in coming weeks on UFC.com.
