Belo Horizonte to Host UFC 147 on June 23rd
Traditional indoor sporting arena “Mineirinho” to receive the third UFC event held on Brazilian soil in less than one year. Agreement to be made official on May 15th, during a meeting between government officials, UFC and IMX representatives; UFC 147 star and TUF coach Vitor Belfort to attend. Event features highly anticipated rematch between The Ultimate Fighter Brazil coaches Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva, as well as the first Brazilian TUF finals
Minas Gerais will be the second Brazilian state to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship event. On June 23, the “Mineirinho” arena, in Belo Horizonte, will host the UFC 147, marking the third passage of the organization through Brazil under the Zuffa management. The biggest and one of the most traditional indoor sporting arenas in Brazil, “Mineirinho” fulfilled all of the UFC requirements, rising up as an ideal place to host a show in accordance with the high standards of all the international events and marking the expansion of the UFC throughout the country. Considered one of the biggest markets for the UFC worldwide, next to the United States and Canada, Brazil has already hosted two events, both in Rio de Janeiro.
“It is great for our fans and for the UFC to be able to stage events in new parts of Brazil. The UFC is exploding everywhere in the country and Minas Gerais, being the third biggest state in the country, seemed like the perfect place for this. Not only has Mineirinho received some major acts through the years, but it is also located in a central and touristic area of the city. It will certainly be a fantastic experience for the fans”, says Marshall Zelaznik, UFC Managing Director of International Development.
The deal was settled last Wednesday, May 9, when Minas Gerais officials Marcello Faulhaber, Secretary for Development of the City of Belo Horizonte, and Agostinho Patrus Filho, Secretary of State for Tourism, met with IMX representatives Sergio Mello, Vice President of Operations and Special Projects, and José Roberto Pacheco, Vice-President of Commercial. Next week, on May 16, UFC representatives Zelaznik and Jaime Pollack, Vice President of International Development & GM – Latin America, will meet with City officials in Belo Horizonte to celebrate the agreement. They will also be joined by IMX representatives and UFC legend and UFC 147 star Vitor Belfort.
The finale of the first Brazilian version of the reality show The Ultimate Fighter brings as its main attraction the rematch between TUF coaches Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva, who meet in the Octagon over 14 years after their first encounter. The event will also crown the winners of both weight divisions featured on TUF, with two UFC contracts on the line. The finalists of each weight division featured on the show, which will have its last episode aired on the Sunday before the event, will face off on the main card. The two winners – a featherweight and a middleweight – will receive contracts with the biggest MMA promotion in the world.

Former Strikeforce Champion ‘King Mo’ Lawal signs with Bellator & TNA Wrestling
In an unprecedented move – one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts, “King Mo” Lawal, has signed a deal to compete in Spike TV’s two major sports properties, Bellator Fighting Championships and TNA’s IMPACT Wrestling. King Mo will join the stars of TNA this summer and resume his mixed martial arts career next year when Bellator Fighting Championships moves to Spike TV from its current television home, MTV2. The deal was jointly announced today by Kevin Kay, President, Spike TV along with Bjorn Rebney, Chairman & CEO, Bellator Fighting Championships and Dixie Carter, President, TNA Entertainment.
“King Mo is an incredible athlete and a great addition to the Bellator family. He immediately adds prominence and star-power to our light heavyweight division,” said Rebney.
“King Mo is the perfect athlete for this type of alliance. He is the real deal in MMA, and his bold personality and world class wrestling accomplishments are unparalleled. I’m confident he will have a major impact in both sports,” stated Carter.
Lawal (10-1-1) launched his mixed martial arts career in 2008, and after four straight wins, he faced off against his toughest challenge, renowned fighter Mark Kerr. King Mo knocked out Kerr in the first round, and eight months later he defeated Gegard Mousasi in a Light Heavyweight world title fight. Lawal also holds an impressive KO victory against multiple-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Roger Gracie in September 2011.
“This deal is a dream come true for me,” Lawal said. “Bjorn and Dixie have given me the opportunity to engage in my two great loves, mixed martial arts and professional wrestling, at the same time. And, to have it all on Spike TV is really Buttercream icing on a big ole cake – not that whipped cream stuff either!”

The UFC Announces The Ultimate Fighter – Australia vs. UK
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has confirmed it will film an Australian edition of its hit reality television series, The Ultimate Fighter (‘TUF’), giving Aussie and British mixed martial artists the opportunity to secure a lucrative contract with the world’s preeminent mixed martial arts organization.
The Australian series, dubbed The Smashes – a play on the 130 year-old cricket rivalry, will see undiscovered professional MMA fighters from Australia and the United Kingdom live together in The Ultimate Fighter House in Australia and compete against each other for a prized UFC contract. This is only the second time in TUF’s seven-year history that teams will represent their country of origin, the first taking place in 2009, during the ninth series, as Team USA took on Team UK.
“Australia and the UK have a fierce, long-standing rivalry, and where better to settle the score than in the UFC’s Octagon,” said Marshall Zelaznik, UFC’s Managing Director of International Development. “The popularity of MMA has exploded in Australia and the UK, with gyms opening all over the respective countries. There is an athlete in one of those gyms who hasn’t had the chance to show the world what he can do – The Ultimate Fighter is going give to him that opportunity. We’re going to discover the UFC’s future stars, you can bet on it.”
The Smashes marks the second international edition of The Ultimate Fighter franchise. The first, currently airing in Brazil, brought in record viewership numbers, recording 12 million viewers for the Premiere episode and attesting to the successful global expansion of the series. With its continued worldwide success, the UFC hopes to one day host several tournaments in different countries, crowning one unanimous winner across an international format.

The Legionarius Alessio Sakara visited AS Roma football team to meet with The Gladiator Francesco Totti and World Cup Winner Daniele De Rossi
Alessio “Legionarius” Sakara had the honor of meeting Francesco “Gladiator” Totti and Daniele “Future Captain” De Rossi, two exceptionally talented athletes, at the AS Roma training ground in Trigoria.
Danielle De Rossi, midfielder of AS Roma and Italian National Team player and Alessio Sakara, UFC athlete known as “Legionarius”, joked around in front of the video cameras of Roma Channel exchanging ideas about their passion for UFC, global premier organization in the promotion of Mixed Martial Arts.
“MMA is a sport that fascinates me”, explained De Rossi “Like all contact sports, they are tough but at the roots of combat is a loyalty and respect between the athletes. With Alessio, however, I would only compete against with my playstation”, De Rossi continued referring to the UFC video game Undisputed 3, which features Alessio Sakara as a character.
“Behind a sport like MMA there is a physical preparation that is 10 times that of football” – the Roma midfielder continued. “It is a sport where you have to be an athlete that is 100%, its not hard to be submitted by your opponent, so you have to stay focused at all times”.
“Rome is my city and I’m very happy to be here today. When I spoke about Rome however, I don’t just mean my city, I mean the whole empire. I am in love with what our ancestors left us and it is thanks to them that Rome is such a popular city today. Roman fighters, Legionarius, are my inspiration because I aim to always have the same determination that they had during battle,” Alessio Sakra explained.
During their meet and greet, Sakara and the young footballer exchanged UFC gloves and an AS Roma jersey baring De Rossi’s team number.
A meeting between Roman athletes that pride themselves of an ever growing stars and stripes background. In fact, AS Roma has recently been purchased by the American Thomas DiBenedetto, born in Boston with Italian origins. This summer, AS Roma will be visiting Boston, Chicago, and New York with a series of friendly matches.
