Do You Want the Xbox One DVR? Better Get a Gold Subscription
One Hit Pixel made a nice little discovery this past week as they found out that Game DVR, the Xbox One’s system for recording and uploading footage from users’ games will be restricted to Xbox Live Gold members. This comes from an Xbox Live features page on Xbox.com, which lists features like SmartMatch, NFL on Xbox, Xbox One’s TV Guide feature and, crucially, its Game DVR feature as Xbox live Gold specific features. Microsoft’s Game DVR allows Gold members to record up to 5 minutes of in-game footage for editing and upload to the Xbox live service. Players can also save the last 30 seconds of a game instantly during times when pausing the game may not be possible, such as during an online multiplayer match.

Blackpowder Games Unveils Studio and Debut Property PC Action Adventure Betrayer
Seattle-based indie game developer Blackpowder Games today revealed Betrayer, an eerie and atmospheric first-person action adventure game for the PC. Betrayer is the self-funded debut of the studio, which was founded by ex-Monolith developers best known as the creative team responsible for the No One Lives Forever series and the original F.E.A.R. “We wanted to get back to crafting games more intuitively,” said Creative Director Craig Hubbard. “There’s a sense of discovery and excitement when you navigate by instinct rather than market research and open yourself up to opportunities that arise during development.”
Betrayer washes you ashore in the New World in 1604, where you’re expecting to join a struggling English colony on the Virginia coast. Instead you find only ghosts and mysteries in a land drained of color and life. You’ll build up an arsenal of weaponry including muskets, crossbows and throwing axes, collecting untold treasures along the way. Chart your own course through an untamed wilderness teeming with danger and discovery as you search for survivors and unravel the colony’s many mysteries, including the identity of the strange, silent woman in red who helps from afar. Betrayer is set to release as a Steam Early Access title in August. The game is powered by the latest award-winning Unreal Engine 3 technology.

Nintendo Continues to Sell Wii U Hardware at a Loss
According to GamesIndustry International, a Nintendo representative has confirmed that the company’s Wii U home console continues to be sold at a loss. Here is the scoop – “Nintendo’s annual report cited Wii U hardware sales as a major factor in the company’s 36.4 billion yen ($387 million) operating loss. In the same document, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata promised investors the company will “strive to regain ‘Nintendo-like’ profits” in the current fiscal year. Selling hardware at a loss is a decidedly un-Nintendo-like practice. Iwata made headlines last October when he first revealed the company would be losing money on each Wii U sold.”

Is Sony and PlayStation 4 Winning the Next-Gen Console Arms Race?
Sony CFO Masaru Kato recently spoke to investors during an earnings conference call and he stated that the majority of potential customers prefer PlayStation 4 over Xbox One, Wii U, or other competing products. Here is a portion of what Kato had to say – “Some polls indicate 80 percent of potential customers prefer the PlayStation 4 over competition like the Xbox One and Wii U. This is very encouraging and we are doing our best to secure enough chipsets and capacity to meet demand at launch”. Not sure what polls these are but it doesn’t bode well for Microsoft.
