del Toro Still Shopping InSane

Visionary director Guillermo del Toro hasn’t given up on his dream of bringing his game concept InSane to life. Since THQ nixed development on the title in August, apparently del Toro has continued shopping the project around. According to recent interview with the filmmaker via Kotaku, “When something doesn’t happen in one way, I just continue pursuing it in another way. I own the property and I control it. I’m not giving up on InSane.” If given the choice, del Toro would happily work with Half-Life developer Valve on the project.

Project Eternity Update

Obsidian Entertainment’s new isometric PC role playing game Project Eternity has received its first promotional screenshot (above), depicting a beautifully rendered forest environment – replete with a simple campground, waterfall, and dungeon entrance across a shallow bridge. Eternity has been funded by Kickstarter (the campaign, which ends October 16th, has already more than doubled its $1.1 million goal), and though its being built around the longstanding Infinity Engine, new rendering packages will enable Obsidian to achieve more realistic levels of detail in the game’s environments, especially the trees and grass.

Free RE6 DLC

According to Capcom, Resident Evil 6’s recently uncovered DLC on the shooter’s disc will be free, and will only work when accompanied by an actual download. The DLC, which includes a new co-op partner and the No Hope difficult mode, is “incomplete” according to Capcom, and will arrive “soon” at an unspecified date. Additional DLC in the form of the Survivors, Predator and Siege game modes should be arriving soon afterwards, first on the Xbox 360, and then the PlayStation 3.

A premium bundle costing $80 is on its way for 2013’s much-anticipated God of War: Ascension. Billed as a prequel to the first three God of War titles, the Ascension Collector’s Edition includes a detailed Kratos statue, as well as the game’s soundtrack, a pass for unannounced DLC, and a “multiplayer double XP unlock.” The game will first hit stores on March 12th, 2013.

David Fincher Producing Halo 4 Launch Trailer

Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Fincher (Fight Club, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) will be producing the two-minute Halo 4 launch trailer, which will be directed by visual effects virtuoso Tim Miller (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World). The live-action piece filmed in Prague, titled “Scanned,” will premiere on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on October 18th. “Scanned” continues the origin story of Halo protagonist Master Chief, and if 343 Industries’ franchise development director Frank O’Connor is to be believed, “fans are going to be blown away.”

Black Ops II Engine Issues?

Fan complaints that the Call of Duty: Black Ops II game engine isn’t polished enough are being met head-on by Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar. In an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, Vonderhaar came out swinging to criticisms being leveled at the 60 frames-per-second engine: “It runs at 60 [frames-per-second] and it’s gorgeous. What exactly is there to be upset about with the engine?” Further advancements in the Call of Duty franchise’s graphical qualities will mostly involve adding features and improving the lighting, instead of overhauling what Treyarch has spent years trying to build.

NBA 2K13 Blowing Away Sales Numbers

Visual Concepts’ NBA 2K13 is surpassing even the gargantuan success of its predecessor, blowing past it by 49 percent in its first week on the market (66 percent internationally). Publisher 2K Games has attributed the franchise’s rising success on “expanding global popularity of the NBA 2K brand,” and also indicates that the volume online play on the new basketball sim has doubled that of NBA 2K11. NBA 2K13 is available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, PC and Wii, and will additionally serve as a launch title for the Wii U when it drops on November 18th (November 30th in Europe).

The first expansion pack for Borderlands 2 is due next week on October 16th – the first of four initial DLC expansions for the game’s campaign. Called Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty, the DLC pack is pirate-themed, focusing on a character trying to build a utopia while fending off pirates on Pandora. Available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, the DLC will cost $10 (800 MS points), and arrives hot on the heels of Borderlands 2’s Mechromancer DLC, which was released earlier this week.
