Aliens: Colonial Marines Delayed Again
The excruciatingly long development process for Aliens: Colonial Marines has been extended again, this time until fall 2012. According to Game Informer, Sega and Gearbox Software, the decision came down to a simple matter of just trying to achieve the most polished result possible. A statement in the Game Informer article elaborates, “While setting clear goals, deadlines and predictions is helpful, they are often subjective. We don’t want to sacrifice the creative process just for the sake of following a blueprint. We prefer to have the creative discovery shape that blueprint because our goal is to make a great game, and we are prioritizing this goal over the previously targeted date.” The squad combat shooter is slated for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
Super Mario Updates
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed in a recent investor’s meeting that an original, 2D Mario game is coming to the 3DS during the next fiscal year (April 2012-March 2013). Additionally at the conference, Iwata mentioned that he intends for the new Mario and other 3DS titles to arrive on the console “without any extreme interruptions.”

Witcher 2 Xbox 360 News
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings will hit the Xbox 360 on April 17th this year. After it’s highly-regarded first splash on the PC and weathering delays on its way to consoles, the action RPG will finally reach Xbox 360 gamers, at apparently “no quality compromise.” The Xbox 360 version will include the changes implemented with September 2011’s 2.0 update.
The Nintendo Network has been Confirmed
The Nintendo Network has finally been confirmed, as a branded online service for both the Wii U and the 3DS. According to company president Satoru Iwata, “Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been focused upon specific functionalities and concepts, we are aiming to establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers.” Some proposed details regarding the Nintendo Network include personal accounts and full retail games that can be purchased online.

No Lara Croft for Nintendo Platforms
Unfortunately for Nintendo users, Tomb Raider – an upcoming reboot of the franchise that finally tells Lara Croft’s origin story – will not be available on the Wii U, or any other Nintendo platforms, for that matter. Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart explained, “When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform. Given that we’ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across.”
News & Notes for Next-Gen Xbox
“Games industry sources” recently tipped to Kotaku that the new, as-yet-untitled Xbox console would employ Blu-Ray disc technology. Furthermore, additional rumors suggest that a Kinect-style fully-body gesture-recognition system will come included with the console. There could potentially be a smaller controller for the new Xbox, as well as blocks implemented within the console to prevent users from playing used titles. Additional details will undoubtedly be unveiled at this year’s E3.
