GTA V Update

Developer Rockstar, the gaming titan behind such revolutionary titles as Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne, recently answered numerous questions about their development process on their company website. In addition to apologizing to gamers for the long gestation period of their titles, they dropped new details about Grand Theft Auto V, and included two new screens. The first is a helicopter soaring over the city of Los Santos, and the second depicts two characters sitting on a placid dock. There will apparently not be any beta testing for Grand Theft Auto V.

Tomb Raider Controversy

The Tomb Raider reboot has been met with a huge degree of skepticism, due to key revisions of Lara Croft’s character and an attempted rape in one of the game’s trailers. Assuaging some fan anxieties is the recent revelation that Rhianna Pratchett, who wrote the phenomenal, female-driven Mirror’s Edge and Heavenly Sword, has been working on the project as a lead writer for two years. On the Tomb Raider blog, Pratchett posts, “I have lived and died as Lara Croft, but nothing comes close to the challenge of re-writing her.”

Spartacus Legends Announced

Spartacus Legends, the third-person fighting game based on Starz’ popular TV show, is coming to next generation consoles in early 2013. Ubisoft’s new game seems more ambitious than most TV-based game properties, as it tracks the life of a gladiator through training, strategic weapon choices and even a detailed create-a-gladiator mode. Liam McIntyre, the lead of the show, is lending his vocal talents to the character Spartacus.

Fortnite to Consoles?

Fortnite, the “sandbox survival game” by Epic Games, will be the first game on the marketplace to use the Unreal 4 Engine. Cliff Bleszinski, the designer of Fortnite, said at the San Diego Comic Con that while PC exclusivity would definitely be in place in the game’s early outing, he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of platform incarnations later.

NetherRealm may Expand

Ed Boon, the creative director at NetherRealm Studios, said in an interview with the PlayStation Blog that he wants to branch the company away from its tendency to make only fighting games. The degree of success reaped by NetherRealm’s upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us would determine whether future non-fighting ventures would be risks worth taking. Boon told the Blog, “If it does well, we would like to see our next step be a non-fighting game, maybe something unique in its own right. This is our first step in that direction.”

Whereas earlier reports indicated an August 28th release, a recent trailer for High Moon Studios third-person shooter lists the release date as August 21st. This follow-up to 2010’s War for Cybertron will supposedly feature an inflated multiplayer campaign, where players can customize their bots before rolling into battle.
