Global Fight League (GFL) is hoping to revolutionize combat sports.
The upstart mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is expected to debut later this year with a team-based format spread across multiple cities. In addition, GFL head cheese Darren Owen is planning to lure top talent with its ambitious 50/50 revenue-sharing plan.
Half of zero is still zero, but let’s not get bogged down by the math.
“No, I don’t think [GFL is] blowing smoke,” UFC CEO Dana White said during the Power Slap press conference. “I think these guys are blowing real cash. These guys are throwing a lot of money around. I love it. Good for the fighters. It’s good for them. I don’t know anything about his business plan or what the deal is, but no, I don’t consider any combat sports my competition. My competition is the NFL, college football, soccer, big movies that come out on Saturday. I don’t look at other combat sports and look at them as competitors.”
Probably because he’s too busy being WORRIED about that other ‘FL.
White has faced competition from multiple fight organizations over the years, including PRIDE FC, Strikeforce, EliteXC, Affliction, and Bellator, only to see them all fall by the wayside after failing to achieve the coveted status of CO-LEADER in MMA.
Can’t say he didn’t warn us.
