Five Reason to Watch the UFC on FX 2 Sydney
By: Christopher “sLapDatSuCKa” Jester
After the heavy build up to UFC 144, it is to no surprise that the UFC will be putting on two back-to-back broadcasts rather than another numbered pay-per-view. Although this is true, their ventures are no less grandiose. This time, the UFC is heading back to Sydney, Australia for the third time for UFC on FX 2: Alves vs. Kampmann on March 3rd.
You have to admire how much Zuffa and the guys at UFC are trying to entertain fight fans with as many fights as they can muster. Not only are they globe-hopping, but they are putting together stout and competitive match-ups on televised events.
Without a doubt some will look at this card and find reasons why to complain that there is not enough star power to make this card interesting. Well here are five reasons as to why you’re wrong, and why you should want to see this event.
1. The Flyweights
UFC on FX 2 marks the first event that UFC fans get to see Flyweights. The semi-finals that will eventually crown the first ever UFC Flyweight Champion begin here, and what a great semi-final it is. Joseph Benavidez will take on Yasuhiro Urushitani; one of the best Flyweights in the world. And Demetrious Johnson will face Ian McCall, who is ranked by many as the #1 Flyweight in the world. This is also a good place to start to look at some new faces that will soon make up the Flyweight division’s roster. Besides, the lighter weight classes have been on a tear lately with their performances. Who doesn’t want to see scrappy 125 pounders beat each other up?
2. A striking heavy main event
In the main event, are two of the UFC welterweight division’s most talented strikers and Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann always show up to fight. With only two victories in his last five fights, Alves has mainly been grounded and pounded on by wrestlers, but he won’t have to worry about that here, as Kampmann always looks to put on an entertaining show. Alves recently just came off a first round submission win over Papy Abedi at UFC 138, and Kampmann ruthlessly outworked Rick Story at UFC 139. This matchup should have its fireworks, as Alves looks to demolish his opponent, and Kampmann’s crafty striking should make this a striker’s delight. Each will look to either knock the other out, or submit his opponent if the fight reaches the ground.
3. Court McGee’s Rise
Say what you want about Court McGee, but his last couple of outings have been impressive. The Ultimate Fighter 11 winner has been putting on workman like performances since his submission victory over Kris McCray at the Ultimate Fighter season finale, and it has earned him victories over Ryan Jensen and Dongi Yang. He will have to show just how burly he can be when he takes on Constantinos Phillippou who will look to blast and flurry him with his crisp boxing. McGee’s approach to fighting may not be eye candy for some, but you have to admire how well he performs on fight night.
4. The obvious one – its Free!
If this is not a reason enough to see it, then you are not a true MMA fan. While it may not be as free to view as UFC on Fox, which anyone can get, FX is still available to most who have cable or satellite TV. Even if you don’t have this channel, it’s likely that one of your friends do. So go over their house, eat up their food and drink their beer. At least by the end of the night it’s guaranteed someone’s getting punched in the face. Here’s hoping to it not being you.
5. MMA Is MMA
Every event will not be pay-per-view quality, which is obviously the reason it is not on pay-per-view. Not every fight will be fight of the year. But we all know that some of the best performances come from guys who don’t have to worry about their fame or stardom. As of late, MMA fans seem to be torn between wanting every fight to being a spectacle and not accepting it for what it is: an evolving sport. With tons of different martial arts, styles, and game-plans, no one fight should ever be the same. Not everyone will charge in looking to put on Nick Diaz like performances. Others will look to utilize what their good at to keep the advantage in their favor. That is MMA, folks. The name itself tells you what kind of sport this is. So stop the bickering and accept fights for what they are: entertainment.
