Short Bus, Coke-Monkey, White Guy Dancing = DDP
What do a short bus, a drugged monkey, and a white guy grooving all have in common?
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis returns for his first fight of the year as he rematches former 185 lb kingpin Sean Strickland at UFC 312 this weekend (Sat., Feb. 8, 2025) from inside Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
It seems that any time Du Plessis is mentioned, the first thing that is brought up is his wild fight style, which no one has been able to figure out inside the Octagon.
Whether it be UFC CEO Dana White saying DDP “fights like a white guy dances,” Robert Whittaker calling him a “pub fighter,” or Chris Curtis’ “coked-out chimpanzee in a phone booth” comparison.
Strickland, who has spent 25 minutes locked in a cage with him, has added to the laundry list of comparisons.
“Dricus, he fights like a retard off a short bus, dude,” Strickland told Daniel Cormier recently. “Nah, I’m serious, he goes f—king full send. I mean, really, if you were to go watch two little special kids fight, they would resemble Dricus. He just goes head-down, full send, but it’s highly effective.”
“But unlike last time, you’re not going to headbutt me, and I’m going to pick you apart for five rounds,” Strickland added while looking directly into the camera.
Strickland might be the latest fighter to dogpile on Du Plessis’ fight style, but “Stillknocks” had a perfect response a few days earlier to all of Strickland mocking him leading up to the fight.
“He said, ‘To death, let’s go, ‘let’s fight to death,’ and the man threw a jab and a teep for five rounds. And this is a stat, you can check it, for 23 minutes I went forward, he went forward for two minutes,” Du Plessis said. “That is a very clear indication of who is there to fight and who is there to defend. Let’s not go and act as if Sean Strickland’s fights are entertaining. The man has eight split decisions.”
