Alvarez shared his thoughts on the shifting fighting environment and why he chose to fight William Scull over Jake Paul.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is set to battle William Scull on May 3rd in Saudi Arabia as the first battle in a four fight deal with fighting strength agent Turki Alalshikh. Thursday saw the first press conference for the match, but any articles that generated were largely overshadowed by the news that Alalshikh was teaming up with UFC family business TKO and Dana White to form a new fighting division.
During an interview with CBS Sports ’ Brian Campbell, Alvarez shared his thoughts on White’s appearance in fighting and the potential tectonic shift it may cause in the game.
“ I think it ’s the best for the fighters out there. I’m okay with that, ” Canelo said. “ I think they’re gonna do the best for the soldiers. I’m very certain about that. And I’m glad somebody [will ] take care of the fighters because there is a lot of promoters who don’t take seriously the soldiers, and I think this is good for boxing. For the soldiers, specifically. ”
” I don’t even call [boxing Paul ] a fight, it’s more of an event than a fight. That event may delay til I retire. “@Canelo tells our @BCampbell why he chose the fight against William Scull over a match with Jake Paul photograph. tweets. com/hPWIdATP8c— CBS Sports (@CBSSports ) March 6, 2025
Considering Canelo is expected to bank career-high paychecks under his deal with Turki Alalshikh, it ’s expected that he’d have friendly words about Turki’s new group. All indicators are pointing towards Alvarez helping blow the campaign off — his superfight against Terence Crawford in September is expected to headline the establish event.
Yeah, always [the ] opportunity to fight in September in Las Vegas, ” he said of the rumors. “That’s my time. But I need to take care of the May fight first, and then we’ll view about September. But the chance to fight in September in Las Vegas and be the the second occasion, tomorrow. ”
And Campbell had to ask about Canelo’s decision to ditch a struggle against YouTube influencer Jake Paul in favor of the Alalshikh package. Why did he turn down a huge fight like Paul to fight a relative unknown like Scull?
“Because it ’s better for me, ” Canelo said simply. “This point in my career, I just gotta continue making story, you know? That [ Jake Paul ] fight, I don’t even call it a fight. It’s like αn eveȵt more than a duel. That event you waited until I retire. ”
