Lando Norris started the Japanese Grand Prix weekend with the fastest time in a strong competition with George Russell for top spot in the first free training program.
Home preferred Yuki Tsunoda even impressed in his first excursion with Red Bull Racing with a shoulder only 0. 1 moments slower than new partner Max Verstappen.
Norris needed three tries to complete his flying shoulder after wasting his first two soft-shod days with mistakes at the last chicane.
He first suffered a great jump of oversteer on leave, and on his second try a great bit of the pavement sent him sliding off the road and into the sand. A stormy weather, whipping through the chicane and down the top flat, was good at least partly to blame.
He made no such error on his last effort. Purple in the first two fields, he was somewhat more restrained in the chicane to set the fastest time at 1m 28. 549s, besting Russell’s best effort by 0. 163s.
