Team Paul Lashes Out After Losing Canelo Fight
Look man, it goes like this: you either smoke, or you get smoked. And you got smoked! —Sidney Deane
Jake Paul was “deep in negotiations” to fight Canelo Alvarez.
Unfortunately for “El Gallo,” it appears the super middleweight champion was using those negotiations to leverage a better deal with Saudi boxing bigwig Turki Alalshikh, who was able to sign Alvarez to a four-fight deal for Riyadh Season.
Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), responsible for Paul’s wheelings and dealings, sent out a scathing memo on Friday morning, taking shots at shady promoters and reporters on the take after Canelo — boxing’s biggest star — left Paul high and dry.
“MVP was deep in negotiations for a blockbuster fight between Jake Paul and Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, a massive event for the Mexican, Puerto Rican and American fans, and it’s disappointing to see how the situation unfolded. MVP operates with integrity, transparency, and respect for the sport, its athletes, and the fans. Unfortunately, not everyone in the boxing world shares those values.”
“This situation is a reminder not to believe everything you read, especially when the current media environment is often controlled by those with hidden agendas, including promoters who have reporters on their payroll.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn was telling anyone who would listen that Paul vs. Canelo was “done” and worth upwards of $200 million in revenue. It should also be noted that Hearn sued Paul back in October after “El Gallo” made accusations of bribery.
“We remain in active discussions with multiple high-profile opponents and are committed to delivering the biggest fights, the most exciting events, and to working with partners who share our values and our commitment to boxing and its fighters,” MVP continued. “Jake Paul isn’t going anywhere, and neither is MVP. We’ll continue to disrupt boxing, on our terms.”
Sorry, but there’s only one person disrupting boxing these days.
The 28 year-old Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) managed to secure a blockbuster super fight against a zombified Mike Tyson late last year, but the Netflix-streamed extravaganza may have done more harm than good, at least in terms of “El Gallo’s” stock among big-ticket boxers.
On the plus side, at least he’s not fighting Dillon Danis.
